Noncitizens are authorized to work in the US by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

Visiting a Social Security office is optional if the individual applied in their home country with their immigrant visa application. If the individual did not apply on their immigrant visa application, they must have DHS papers showing their US immigration status and authorization to work in the US. An application must be completed to apply for a Social Security Number and card. Take the completed application and original documents to the local Social Security Office. Documents must be either originals or copies certified by the issuing agency. Photocopies or notarized copies of documents are not accepted.
